How to create a mission statement from your values
Now that you’ve got your values, let’s put them to work.
This week, we’ll use our values to create a personal mission statement. Much like a business or organization, individuals can have a powerful mission statement to show up authentically in the world. Your mission statement can quickly tell people exactly who you are and what you stand for.
Take a look at what you’ve chosen as your values. Are there themes that stand out to you or a few that could mean the same thing? Whittle them down to about 3 key pieces you feel strongly resonate to build out your current mission statement.
Why do I say current? Because we’re always learning and changing. Holding yourself to outdated values can hold you back from doing the work you want to be doing right now. Have you been holding on to a value that was instilled in you by your family or school but really doesn’t support you now? Time to let that one go. Just because someone told you “you should,” doesn’t mean you have to. You’re in charge.
So with that said, what are your top 3 current values? Try to form those into a brief statement about yourself. For example:
“I stand for women’s rights, taking inspired action, and creative experimentation.”
“I value deep personal connections, trusting my gut, and working collaboratively on meaningful projects.”
“My values include speaking up for animals, creating safe spaces for others, and an organized home life.”
What stands out to you as your personal mission statement? What do you stand for? If you’re open to sharing, I’d love to hear what your mission statement is.
Next time we’ll look at how to turn your mission statement into a mantra board.
